OST states that people, their organisations and communities act as open systems. Therefore, when they conduct their business, they influence and change their external environments, social as well as physical, while at the same time being influenced by external changes from local and global environments. This is known as socio-ecological change

Open Systems Theory (OST) can play a very important role in achieving consensus on climate change as well as producing climate change adaption and mitigation plans that people from all walks of life are committed to.

At AMERIN we believe that this is such a vital concern for humanity that in 2009 we initiated the Sustainable Future Planning & Design (SFP&D) development program. It introduces business, education and community leaders to OST planning and design tools that can be applied in their organisations and communities to develop effective strategies and action plans for mitigating and adapting to climate change.
